Fedora 新闻周报(#67)
FC6 downloads and installs StatsMax Spevack (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MaxSpevack) announces in fedora-announce-list (http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2006-November/msg00002.html): Since release, we've been tracking the number of unique IP addresses that check in via yum for updates. This metric is much more useful than tracking downloads, because it demonstrates actual *installed instances* of FC6 that are making a connection back to our servers in search of updated software. That's 300,000 different IP addresses that have checked for any updated software in Fedora Core 6.If you simply divide it out, that averages to about 12,500 per day, or 8.7 every minute. And basically, those are *new installs* of FC6. Fedora summit wrap-upGreg DeKoenigsberg (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/GregDeKoenigsberg) points out in his blog (http://gregdek.livejournal.com/7668.html): OK, so it's taken me a little longer than I'd hoped, but here are my wrapups for all the big sessions:
We'll be updating these plans as we start to make headway on them. Please note: these are *proposals*. If you have objections to these proposals, this is the time to make them known. Back from the Fedora SummitWarren Togami (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/WarrenTogami) points out in hig blog (http://wtogami.livejournal.com/11707.html): The result of this exercise was to come to agreement on a number of recommendations. These recommendations now require buy-in from both RH engineering and Fedora community committees (especially FESCo and Fedora Project Board). When all parties are in agreement, then we will be able to aggregate a comprehensive project roadmap. FC6 was the final release of Fedora Core. - A much stronger software distribution and community project will take its place. There has never been a better time to get involved in the Fedora Project. Fedora contributors today shape the direction and accelerate the rate of progress of the entire FOSS ecosystem. FACTFest 2006Sam Folk-Williams (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SamFolkWilliams) reports in his blog (http://samfw.blogspot.com/2006/11/factfest-2006.html): Last night I did my first presentation as a Fedora Ambassador. The event was a first annual free software fest at SUNY Farmingdale, about 30 miles from NYC on the LIRR. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the event ended being a very cool mix of people with free software interests engaging in a lively discussion. Getting ready for VANLUGLuya Tshimbalanga (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/LuyaTshimbalanga) reports in his blog (http://thefinalzone.blogspot.com/2006/11/getting-ready-for-vanlug.html): Busy weekend. I just took a break for making a presentation of Fedora Core 6 and Fedora Project for Vancouver Linux Users Group which will debut on November 20, 2006. A local computer store was kind enough to give me a laptop for the demonstration of Fedora Core 6 (Zod) live spin and Sugar interface from OLPC Project. Should you be interested to view that event and live near Vancouver, here is the address. SELinux: setroubleshootd in actionDaniel Walsh (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DanielWalsh) points out in his blog (http://danwalsh.livejournal.com/7995.html): One of the big advancements, in SELinux is the introduction of the setroubleshooter. This is available for the first time in Fedora Core 6 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Beta 2. The following is a mechanism to demonstrate how this tool works. He also points out in his blog (http://danwalsh.livejournal.com/8244.html): I have added a new gui package to policycoreutils. The rpm package is policycoreuitls-gui. The goal of this gui is to be able to manage the SELinux components of the system. You can run this tool via the command system-config-selinux The tool is still under development. Any comments/bugzillas,patches appreciated. Yum Extender Next GenerationTim Lauridsen (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/TimLauridsen) points out in his blog (http://linux.rasmil.dk/cms/modules/wordpress/2006/11/16/yum-extender-next-generation/): I have just made a build of development branch of Yum Extender (1.9.x). It has been rewritten from scratch for better speed and to make it easier to use.
Review: Fedora Core 6According to recent review posted at ComputerWorld.com (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9004905): There are many other features of Fedora Core 6, and I am looking forward to investigating them more in depth. The bottom line is that networkers should consider Fedora Core 6 not just for network monitoring but as a desktop office tool. The features and ease of installation coupled with the low cost make investigating time installing and discovering Fedora Core 6's features worthwhile.
